On Saturday, Allen West, a very popular former Congressman from Florida, now running for chair of the Texas Republican Party, has been hospitalized after receiving injuries from a motorcycle accident.
The accident happened about 5 p.m. on Interstate 35 outside Waco, the Texas Department of Public Safety told KWTX-TV.
In a series of posts utilizing the hashtag #PrayersForAllen, “Team West” reported a car had cut West off while he was driving his motorcycle, forcing a collision with another motorcycle.
“Please pray for Allen West. He is in Emergency and his motorcycle has been hit outside of WACO. On my way to hospital now,” Angela Graham West posted on Facebook.
West’s political opponent, James Dickey, the Texas Republican Chairman, joined other Texas Republicans by asking for prayers for West.
“I have just learned that Allen West has been in a motorcycle accident outside of Waco and is in the emergency room,” Dickey posted on Facebook. “I ask you to join me and my family in praying for him and his family.”
West was transported to a hospital by helicopter and was in stable condition however undergoing additional evaluation of his condition.
It wasn’t clear what the nature of West’s injuries were as details weren’t forthcoming about West or any other people who were hurt in the accident.
Earlier Saturday, West led a “Texas Freedom Rally” outside the Statehouse in Austin after reportedly leading a motorcycle group there from Dallas, the Dallas Morning News reported.
The accident occurred as West and others had been returning to Dallas, former state Senator Don Huffines (R-Dallas), told the newspaper.
West, who is 59-years-old, is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. He retired as a Lt. Colonel after serving in the U.S. Army, and later served in the US House of Representatives from January 2011 to January 2013.
